Cut-Leaved Evening Primrose

FAMILY: Onagraceae

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Oenothera laciniata

STEMS: Erect to leaning and falling over, up to 16″ tall.

LEAVES: Alternate, the blades ovate or variable, up to 3-7/8″ long. The margins are toothed and usually lobed.

FLOWERS: Radially symmetrical. Sepals and petals 4. The petals are yellow, up to 3/4″ long.

FRUIT: Cylindrical capsules up to 1-3/8″ long.

HABITAT: Sandy soils, Boca Chica Beach, Brazos, Padre, Mustang, and Matagorda Islands.

BLOOM PERIOD: Spring, summer.

COMMENTS: The smaller flowers of O. laciniata distinguish it from the other 2 yellow-flowering evening primroses.
